Let’s get the negatives out of the way.
I read in another review not long ago that this series is ‘tongue-in-cheek’. In reality, a lot of the time, it’s nothing but a spoof; an absolute parody of itself. This is unfortunate because there are some ideas which could have been the foundations for a really good fantasy series. While not a completely uncharted concept, the leather-wearing band of badass brothers could have been wonderful.
The sex. It’s repetitive. Like anything you read multitudinous times in the course of a few days, it gets old, particularly as the same adverbs/adjectives are used in every instance (and throughout both books).
On the plus side, Mary was a much more fully formed protagonist than Beth was. Although, there are some definite “what the fff” moments, including the willingness of the prosaic Mary to accept the existence of vampires and minutes later to know one of them biblically.
The introduction of Zhadist’s story has given me a reason to read on to the next book. Having said that, I probably would’ve done so anyway because, considering the rate at which I’m getting through the books, they definitely fall under the ‘light reading’ category.
That is all.
